It will be a great evening with music from CJ Rouge with guest speaker Theoren Fleury. Theoren Fleury played for four NHL teams, the Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, New York Rangers, and Chicago Blackhawks—during his 16-season NHL career (1988–2003). He won the 1989 Stanley Cup with Calgary and later played for Tappara (Finland), the Belfast Giants (UK), and Team Canada.
Theoren Fleury is a former NHL star and Stanley Cup champion (1989, Calgary Flames) whose story is a remarkable tale of on-ice success masked by severe personal trauma. A 5’5″, 150-lb forward, Fleury was a high-scoring “little giant” who struggled with addiction and self-destruction stemming from sexual abuse by his former junior coach, Graham James.
Abuse and Addiction: During his 16-year NHL career, which included over 1,000 points and a 2002 Olympic gold medal, Fleury coped with childhood and teenage sexual abuse through alcohol, drugs, and gambling, nearly losing his life and millions of dollars to addiction.
The Breaking Point: After his 2009 autobiography Playing with Fire revealed these traumatic details, he underwent a public comeback attempt with the Calgary Flames, which solidified his journey toward redemption.
Advocacy and Recovery: After getting sober in 2005, Fleury became a prominent mental health speaker and abuse advocate.
Legacy: He has been recognized as a trailblazer for speaking out against sexual abuse in sports and we are happy to have him as our guest speaker for the evening.
